What To Do In An Electrical Emergency
WHAT TO DO IN AN ELECTRICAL EMERGENCY
In an electrical emergency it’s important to do the right thing, calmly and quickly. Be sure to share this information with everyone at home and work, so you’re well prepared if an emergency occurs.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU HIT AN OVERHEAD POWERLINE OR UNDERGROUND CABLE
- Evacuate the immediate area
- If you are in a machine, stay there
- If you are at serious risk from another hazard, such as fire, and must leave the machine, jump well clear. Do not touch the machine
- Do not cover up a broken cable or try to fix it yourself
- If someone is injured, phone for an ambulance immediately – dial 111
- Phone your electricity retailer immediately to report the incident
WHAT TO DO IF SOMEONE RECEIVES AN ELECTRIC SHOCK
- Never touch the injured person if they are still in contact with a live source of electricity
- Switch the power off, either at the source or at the main power switch. If you touch the person while they are still in contact with a source of electricity you will also get an electric shock or be electrocuted.
- Phone for an ambulance immediately – dial 111
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR WHOLE AREA LOSES POWER
- Buller Electricity will be working on the problem as soon as it occurs
- If you are located in a remote or rural area, call your electricity retailer to log the fault
- Turn off appliances and electrical equipment – some can be a fire hazard and others might be damaged when the power comes back on
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR PLACE IS THE ONLY ONE WITHOUT POWER
- Check the circuit breakers and/or fuses on your switchboard to see if it is still working
- If your switchboard seems to be working, you may have a fault in the supply to your premises. Call your electricity retailer to log the fault.
